History
The infants part of Sandilands Primary School opened in late 1953 or early 1954, with around 230 infants on roll.
In 1956, at least 70 parents signed a petition complaining that the school was too over-crowded, with some classes being held in the dining hall. At this time the school was built for 240 infants and 320 juniors, but there were 300 infants and about 335 juniors on roll. The number of pupils on roll was due to increase further in the new academic year (summer 1956).[2]
An incident took place in March 1962 when a storage cupboard set on fire, though no wider damage was reported.[3]
Students at Sandilands raised £2,000 in June 1990 by taking part in a sponsored dragon bounce
. From the money raised, £500 was donated to Booth Hall Children's Hospital as a contribution towards their £600,000 A&E extension.[4][5]
As part of Manchester's bid to host the 2000 Summer Olympics, Sandilands welcomed the President of the International Olympic Committee, Juan Antonio, who was given a tour of the school. This was part of a two-day visit to Manchester.[6]
