In July 2026, Andy Burnham became the British Prime Minister and immediately began to transfer government functions up to Manchester, specifically Heron House. A long-term "No 10 North" base is currently being constructed in the Ancoats area of the city centre, and is due to be completed in 2032.[1]

Transport

Tram

An extensive tram network is operated by Metrolink around the city. The city centre features tram stops such as Cornbrook, Deansgate-Castlefield, St Peter's Square, Piccadilly Gardens, Piccadilly, Exchange Square, Shudehill, and Victoria.

Aviation

Manchester Airport is the UK's busiest airport outside of London, ranking third overall. It is located at the far south of the Manchester boundary, in the civil parish of Ringway. While there are other airfields across Greater Manchester, such as Barton Aerodrome in Salford, Manchester Airport is the only airfield technically located within Manchester itself.

Culture

There are many libraries, museums and galleries across Manchester. The Central Library acts as the principal library in the city centre on St Peter's Square.
