Altrincham Road
Altrincham Road (A560) is an A road that runs from Brooklands Roundabout (Baguley) in the west, through to the east where it becomes Northenden Road (Gatley).
The western Baguley end is home to Tesco Baguley, with Brookway Retail Park and Dixons Brooklands Academy on the opposite side of the road. As the road progresses eastwards it becomes home to Wythenshawe Park and McDonalds Baguley, before reaching Sharston Roundabout.
History
The road existed prior to 1839, being labelled as a "Turnpike Road".[1] This meant that it was likely maintained by a turnpike trust that operated toll gates along the route, charging road users a fee to use the well-maintained road. This signals that even in the early 1800s, it was a major thoroughfare for the local area.
Incidents
On 14th September 1981 it was reported that a 43-year-old female, Ann Bell, was hit by a car on Altrincham Road and died shortly after being admitted to hospital. Bell was a resident of Pitsfield Road on the Royal Oak estate in Baguley.[2]
On the night of 5th September 2025, a car smashed into 685 Altrincham Road in Baguley, nearby to McDonalds Baguley. The front of the house suffered serious damage, and three people were hospitalised as a result of the incident. A 25-year-old man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol, and failing to stop.[3]
