Chester Road (A56)
Chester Road (A56) is a major road that runs through Stretford, Gorse Hill and Old Trafford. It's part of the historic Roman road that connected Manchester to Chester.
The modern-day Chester Road starts north of Crossford Bridge where Stretford begins (with Cross Street in Sale to the south), and it runs towards the north-east through Stretford town centre, Gorse Hill and Old Trafford. Just after White City Retail Park the road becomes Bridgewater Way, but then reverts back to being Chester Road on the approach to Manchester city centre. When the road reaches Deansgate, the A56 continues as Bridgewater Viaduct and Chester Road doesn't span any further.
The original road was constructed by the Romans and hence is one of the oldest pathways in Greater Manchester.
